Lord Kelvin is credited with the saying "If you can not measure it, you can not improve it." To effectively measure, and ultimately improve, energy and natural resource use in a building, you must first know how much is used. To obtain the most accurate picture, a building must have meters on all the major users of energy and natural resources: electrical, gas and water.

James L. “Jim” Newman, owner and managing partner of Newman Consulting Group, LLC (NCG) in Farmington Hills, Mich., received the Distinguished Service Award from ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) at the organization's Annual Conference held recently in San Antonio, TX.

Ashley Halligan, an analyst at Software Advice, recently published an article outlining the trending topic of net zero building. Halligan interviewed several experts including Brian Anderson, Founding Partner of Anderson Porter Design, Dru B. Crawley, former Commercial Buildings Team Lead for the Department of Energy and current Director of Building Performance at Bentley Systems, Jeff Blankman, McCormick’s Sustainable Manufacturing Manager, and Blake Bisson, VP of Sales & Marketing at Ekotrope.  

By now you may know that the much anticipated release of LEED 2012 has been postponed. Introduced last November at the Greenbuild Convention, LEED 2012 was supposed to replace LEED 2009 V3 at this year’s convention. Because of so many major changes, and a great deal of excellent feedback from the membership, USGBC made the wise decision to push back the release of this next version for another year and refer to it as LEED V4 rather than LEED 2009.
